Coppa Carlo Negri

The Coppa Carlo Negri is a perpetual challenge trophy and the brainchild of legendary Yacht Club Italiano president Beppe Croce who was also the ISAF’s only non-Anglo-Saxon president for 17 years. The Cup commemorates the latter’s friend, aviator Carlo Negri who was awarded a gold medal for valour. The son of Margherita Pirelli, he was killed in Albania on 24 September 1943 whilst carrying out a voluntary mission to rescue Italian soldiers surrounded by German troops.

The Coppa Carlo Negri perpetual trophy was put up by Margherita Puri Negri in 1945 in memory of her beloved brother. It was first awarded, however, in 1964 and this continued until 1982. After a break of almost 20 years, it was reinstated in 2000 as a perpetual challenge. Sponsored for a long period by Pirelli, the Coppa Carlo Negri, for which Imagina provides shore organisation, communications and PR, has become a Mediterranean classic, attracting hundreds of yachts and some of the leading names in the world of international sailing, business and culture to Santa Margherita in Liguria each year.
